Tie-breaking coin toss makes BSKE2023 history in Masukol, Paombong

The tie between the two opposing parties in Barangay Masukol, Paombong, Bulacan was broken after the vote tally was equalized by means of a coin toss.

Rene Santos from Team Gilas was appointed as the official new barangay captain of Masukol after winning a round of coin toss by picking tails.

Before the decision to continue with the coin toss, the ballot count concluded at 11 PM on October 30.

Elena Coronel and Rene Santos, both chairman aspirants, received an equal 471 votes from the four precincts.

"Napagdesisyunan na i-toss coin na lang at 'di na ibyahe pa sa bayan (ang balota). Tatlong oras na iniintay ang panig ni Rene Santos dahil 'di umano ay masama ang pakiramdam nito. Last minute, bandang alas tres ng madaling araw dumating siya sa eskuwelahan at hinigsa na," Kaizer Geronimo says, one of the voters who witnessed the coin tossing shares.

"Tao ang pinili ni Elena at ibon naman si Rene. Ibon ang nanalo kaya si Rene ang bagong kapitan," Kaizer continued.

Kaizer added that the officials asked both sides how many coin tosses they wanted, and Coronel reportedly said they only wanted one round of coin toss.

The coin tossing took place in front of both parties, as well as teachers and 2 police officials. Anthony Dionisio, a teacher at the Masukol Elementary School was the one asked to lead the round.

"Nagkamay naman sila bago magkara krus. Nakaka-ano lang dahil sa tanda kong ito, ngayon lang nangyari ito sa isla." Pilising, an 81 year old voter shares.

A similar situation occurred for the seventh position of the SK Kagawad, as SK Kagawad aspirants Razen Joy Manumbas and Eddelyn Rivera, both from the same party, also ended up in a tie. Eventually, Razen emerged victorious after choosing the head of the coin.
